collectl Performance Monitoring Tool on Ubuntu 18.

Apps4Rent LLC

An open source and light-weight performance monitoring tool

Collectl stands for ‘Collect for Linux’, and is based on collect tool. It is written by Rob Urban distributed Tru64 Unix Operating System as with DEC. Thus, it is portmanteau for collect for Linux. You can pass collectl data to other apps with preferably two formats: lexpr.ph formats data as a list, and sexpr.ph formats data as an s-expression. You can write your own format too.

Unlike other performance monitoring tools, collectl does not focus in a limited number of system metrics, instead gathers information on varied system type resources such as CPU, disk, memory, network, sockets, and more.

Collectl is installed on top of Ubuntu 18.04 installed on Azure. Apps4Rent engineers have tested Collectl solution on Azure and it works fine.

Key features available Collectl on Ubuntu 18.04:

  • Runs as a daemon and interactively, or both
  • Many outputs format display
  • Monitors any subsystem
  • PS, top, iotop, vmstat utilities role
  • Records and playbacks captured information
