10961 - Automating Administration with Windows PowerShell

John Bryce Training

Learn how with Windows PowerShell , you can remotely manage single or multiple Windows-based servers and automate day-to-day management and administration tasks

This five day course provides students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to use Windows PowerShell for administering and automating administration of Windows based servers. It focuses on primary Windows PowerShell command-line features and techniques, and will provide prerequisite skills supporting many different Microsoft products. This includes Windows Server, Windows Client, Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, SQL Server, System Center, and more. In keeping with that goal, this course will not focus on any one of those products, although Windows Server (which is the common platform for all of those) will serve as the example for the techniques being taught.

In this five day course you will learn to execute and monitor scripts more efficiently through more robust session connectivity, workflow capabilities, improved job scheduling, and Windows PowerShell Web Access. Learn Windows PowerShell with greater ease through improved cmdlet discovery and simplified, consistent syntax across all cmdlets. Write Windows PowerShell scripts quicker and more intuitively through the new Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) that enables script sharing, which connects IT pros to a larger Windows PowerShell user community. Learn all this and more in this five-day Microsoft Official Course in Windows PowerShell.

Benefits using powershell with Azure: Azure PowerShell is designed for managing and administering Azure resources from the command line. Use Azure PowerShell when you want to build automated tools that use the Azure Resource Manager model Azure PowerShell is basically an extension of Windows PowerShell. It lets Windows PowerShell users control Azure’s robust functionality. From the command line, Azure PowerShell programmers use preset scripts called cmdlets to perform complex tasks like provisioning virtual machines (VMs) or creating cloud services. APS can work programmatically too, to automate tasks. While some users complain the terminal feels “unfinished” and support is lacking, proponents point out the ease of use aids typically intensive tasks. The Azure GUI offers an effective way to control Azure’s many services. That said, there comes a time when programmers want to speed up their use of Azure or automate processes to save time and hassle. The Azure PowerShell was designed specifically with speed and automation in mind. Whether it succeeds is open to debate.

Programmers can use Azure PowerShell’s cmdlets to create and manage multiple virtual machines. The system also comes in handy for building environments to test new scripts.

On Completion, Delegates will be able to: Understand the basic concepts behind Windows PowerShell Work with the Pipeline Understand How the Pipeline Works Use PSProviders and PSDrives Format Output Use WMI and CIM Prepare for Scripting Moving From a Command to a Script to a Module Administer Remote Computers Put the various Windows PowerShell components together Use Background Jobs and Scheduled Jobs Use Advanced PowerShell Techniques and Profiles Who Should Go For This Training: IT Professionals who are already experienced in general Windows Server and Windows Client administration, and who want to learn more about using Windows PowerShell for administration. IT Professionals already experienced in server administration, including Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, SQL Server, System Center, and others.

Prerequisites: Before taking this course, students should have experience with Windows networking technologies and implementation. Experience with Windows Server administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting, as well as, experience with Windows Client administration, maintenance, and troubleshooting is recommended. Students who attend this training can meet the prerequisites by obtaining equivalent knowledge and skills through practical experience as a Windows system administrator. No prerequisite courses are required.
